Artist Network at the Usher

This month the Artist Network will be joined by Natasha Caruana from Work Show Grow. She will be speaking to the network about the importance of community in her talk: "Why going it alone doesn't work - how creative community takes you work further, faster". Natasha has previous spoken at Somerset House, Granta x South Bank Centre and the International Centre of Photography in New York.

Natasha says ...

After a year of creative resets - first coming home from a four-month round the world trip to regroup, then setting off again on a two-month European road trip with my family – I’m back with fresh energy and practical insights. I grew up on free school dinners, told I wasn’t good enough to pursue art, and lived with the constant worry of bailiffs at the door. Overcoming that scarcity mindset took time, but it taught me resilience and the value of being resourceful. I learnt that community is key.

I’m now an award-winning artist and Senior Lecturer of Photography at the University of the Arts London, with an MA from the Royal College of Art. My work across photography, moving image and installation has been shown as solo shows at Paris Photo, the International Center of Photography in New York, Les Rencontres de la photographie d’Arles, and more. I’ve won grants from Arts Council England, received support from the Paul Hamlyn Foundation, and in 2024 was selected to join the British Library’s “Get Ready for Growth - Scale Up Programme” to bring business investment into Work Show Grow School.

I started Work Show Grow – an online educational platform because I know how isolating it can feel when you’re talented but unsure how to make your practice sustainable ... and how to keep going when things feel tough. Here, we talk about money without judgement, map out clear steps for finding funding, and build community so no one has to figure it out alone. Through bold decisions and playful, practical systems, I’ve turned my creative work into a sustainable career - and I want to help other artists do the same.

What to expect:

This workshop is taking place in the Clore Learning room at the Usher Gallery. The Clore learning room is accessible by the entrance of the Usher. To find the Clore learning room, enter the Usher gallery by the glass extension entrance and go to the main door on the left. There are ramps and wide doors to accommodate wheelchairs, and a disabled access toilet oppositive the Clore learning room door, behind the reception desk.

This session will run from 17:00-19:00.

In this event you will be invited to talk to and listen to other artists. You will be invited to contribute your thoughts using pen and paper.

This may be challenging if you have difficulty with groups of people, a break out space will be available. People will be talking out loud so it may be noisy, to help you with this we have noise cancelling head phones and fidget toys available.

Here at Lincoln Museum and Usher Gallery, we welcome all participants; if you still aren’t sure whether this workshop is accessible for you or someone you care for, please email us at lincolnmuseum@lincolnshire.gov.uk and we can discuss your access requirements
